STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Singer Charged With Cocaine And Heroin Possession
May 20, 2003STONE TEMPLE PILOTS singer Scott Weiland has been charged with cocaine and heroin possession in Los Angeles, two years after completing a jail term for violating his probation on the same charges, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Weiland, 35, and Jennifer Lynn Sires, 29, were stopped by Burbank police shortly before midnight Saturday after officers saw them driving without lights in a shuttered retail district.
They were arrested after police noticed a syringe in the car, and a search of the vehicle yielded cocaine and heroin, a police spokesman said.
Weiland was released from jail on Sunday after posting $25,000 bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned on June 2.
Sires, who faces a heroin possession charge, was scheduled to be arraigned later Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the new band formed by ex-GUNS N' ROSES members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum issued a statement late Monday claiming that the drugs found in the car occupied by Weiland at the time of his arrest belonged to Sires and not the troubled singer. The statement went on to say that Scott was merely "giving a lift" home to Sires when he was stopped by the police because he was driving without his headlights on.
Weiland, who recently cut two songs with the former members of GUNS N' ROSES and was widely believed to be the top candidate to land the lead singer slot in what's currently dubbed "THE PROJECT," has been arrested on drug charges twice before in California, in 1995 and 1997. He was also busted in New York in 1998, and the next year served prison time in Los Angeles after a heroin overdose that a judge found violated his probation. After his release, Weiland tried to go clean, but was arrested in Las Vegas in 2001 after an argument with his wife Mary over a prescription turned into a domestic violence charge. The Weilands filed for divorce last September.
